The Japanese Bamboo Tea Scoop is a traditional tea utensil handcrafted from soot bamboo in Takayama, Nara Prefecture, Japan.

This rare soot bamboo (susutake) is over 200 years old, and is only found in old Japanese houses with thatched roofs. While providing support for the roof, the areas of the bamboo exposed to the furnace smoke are transformed into a beautiful deep brown color over time.

The bamboo tea scoop (chashaku) is used for scooping out the perfect amount of Japanese tea powder into a tea bowl (chawan). It is an essential tool in the Japanese tea ceremony, and can also enhance the daily matcha or hojicha powder preparation.

In addition to its practical design, the beauty and smoothness of the natural bamboo makes this tea scoop a delight to use.

Please expect and embrace slight variations in color since this item is crafted from centuries old bamboo.

How to care for the Japanese Bamboo Tea Scoop

  • Gently wipe the tea scoop with a soft cloth before and after each use.
  • Avoid contact with water and direct sunlight.
