This nutty, toasty, and smooth Hojicha Tahini Spread is the perfect topping for your next slice of toasted bread.
Hojicha Tahini Spread is inspired by halva, a delicious confection made from ground sesame seeds and sugar. Various nuts, seeds, and spices can be added to halva, and the final treat resembles a crumbly block of fudge. These same ingredients can also be used to create a halva spread. The sweet spread is essentially made of tahini, and one of the more common additions is cocoa powder. If you have ever enjoyed the chocolaty spread, you will want to try this tasty Hojicha Tahini Spread.
What is tahini?
Tahini, also known as tahina, is a condiment made from sesame seeds. The sesame seeds are first hulled to remove the tough and bitter exterior. Then they are toasted to enhance their nutty aroma and flavor. Finally, the hulled and toasted sesame seeds are ground into a smooth paste. Tahini paste can easily be made at home, though you may need to add a bit of neutral oil to achieve the same creamy texture as store bought tahini.
What does Hojicha Tahini Spread taste like?
This Hojicha Tahini Spread recipe features the winning combination of Hojicha Powder and sesame seeds. The homemade hojicha spread has an irresistible toasty, nutty, and rich flavor. The slightly savory ingredients complement each other beautifully, and shine with the addition of agave. The sweetness brings out the deep cocoa notes of the Hojicha Powder, and transforms the spread into an indulgent sweet treat.
Do you need to add oil?
When you make your own tahini at home, you often need to add oil while grinding the thick paste. However, if you're making your Hojicha Tahini Spread with store bought tahini then the final texture will vary from brand to brand. After you’ve combined all of your ingredients, check the consistency of the spread. If you’d like it thinner, then you can gradually add any neutral flavored oil. Some options include refined coconut oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil, safflower oil, and sunflower oil.
How to use Hojicha Tahini Spread?
This Hojicha Tahini Spread can be used in the same way you'd use chocolate spread. Try spreading it over toast, pancakes, or waffles. Or add a spoonful of Hojicha Tahini Spread to your smoothie, overnight oats, or bowl of oatmeal. Hojicha Tahini Spread also makes a great filling for baked goods like sandwich cookies or swirl cakes.
How to make the wave toast pattern?
Creating toast art is a fun way to enjoy your Hojicha Tahini Spread. In the photo above, we used two spoons to create alternating waves of Hojicha Tahini Spread and plain tahini spread. After making a batch of Hojicha Tahini Spread, we mixed 1 part agave and 2 parts tahini in a small bowl. We then used the back of one spoon to swipe Hojicha Tahini Spread, and the back of another spoon to swipe the plain tahini spread. The waves pattern can also be made with Hojicha Tahini Spread and another contrasting seed or nut butters, as well as your favorite fruit jams.
