Iced Hojicha Frappe

Iced Hojicha Frappe

When you're craving a frappuccino, whip up an indulgent Iced Hojicha Frappe at home.

The hojicha frappuccino is a cold blended beverage that is only available in Japan. Whenever the seasonal drink makes an appearance, it quickly sells out. Roasted green tea is already a beloved flavor in Japan, and so it’s no surprise that the rich and smoky tea makes for a fan favorite frappuccino. Let's just say that if you get the chance to taste it, you’ll understand the hype and wish you knew about it sooner.

The good news is that you can easily replicate this popular drink at home with one simple trick.

If you've already tried making sweet iced drinks, you'll know that adding granulated sugar results in a grainy texture. On the other hand, liquid sweeteners can end up clumping or sinking to the bottom. The secret to the perfect Hojicha Frappe is Hojicha Simple Syrup.

Hojicha Simple Syrup creates a silky smooth and flavorful Iced Hojicha Frappe, as it completely dissolves into the cold blended drink. The sweet syrup also allows you to easily adjust the strength of your drink, by simply adding more while blending with the ice and milk.

As you can tell from the name, Hojicha Simple Syrup is super simple to make! All you need to do is heat together sugar, water, and Hojicha Powder. Since the Hojicha Simple Syrup can last for up to two weeks, feel free to make a larger batch ahead of time and save it for later. This way you’ll have enough to enjoy Iced Hojicha Frappes any time your heart desires.

The final step is adding the toppings, and since you're the one in charge you get to create your own custom version. This step is completely optional, but we recommend trying a dollop of whipped cream and a delicate dusting of Hojicha Powder for that classic frappe look. If you're in the mood for something extra, then you can drizzle Hojicha Simple Syrup (here’s how to thicken it) or another syrup of your choice (caramel or chocolate would make for a great addition).

Ingredients

Hojicha Simple Syrup

  • 7.5 g (1.5 tablespoons) Hojicha Powder
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 60 ml (¼ cup) water

Iced Hojicha Frappe

  • 60 ml (¼ cup) Hojicha Simple Syrup
  • 2 cups ice
  • 60 ml (¼ cup) milk (we used soy milk)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Hojicha Simple Syrup by combining 7.5 g (1.5 tablespoons) Hojicha Powder and ¼ cup sugar in a bowl.
  2. Heat 60 ml (¼ cup) water in a small saucepan. As soon as small bubbles begin to appear, reduce the heat to low.
  3. Add the hojicha and sugar mixture to the water and stir until fully dissolved.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
  5. Prepare the Iced Hojicha Frappe by adding the cooled Hojicha Simple Syrup, 2 cups of ice, and 60 ml (¼ cup) milk to a high powered blender.
  6. Blend the ingredients on the frozen drink setting, or for about 30 seconds until smooth (be careful not to over blend).
  7. Pour the blended drink into a glass, and add any desired toppings. We topped ours with coconut whipped cream and a light dusting of Hojicha Powder.
  8. Serve your ice cold Hojicha Frappe with a straw and enjoy!
